Hair is considered to be damaged when one or more of its layers are physically or chemically altered so much that they are unable to return to their original state. Each and every hair has three layers - the inner layer, the middle layer and the outer layer. Outer layer of hair provides protection and shine. When the outer layer gets damaged, the hair becomes dry and loses its shine and luster.
Bleaching: Bleaching opens the outer layer of hair. This makes hair weak and prone to breaking and split ends.
Hair coloring: Chemicals present in the hair coloring dyes make your hair porous to the extent of exposing the middle layer of hair. This damage can last for up to two months. Permanent dyes cause more damage.
Blow dryers, Curling irons and Flat irons: Heat from blow dryers open the outer layer of hair and dries up any moisture. When concentrated heat is applied to your hair, it becomes dry, damaged and brittle. Using a curling iron or a flat iron often will leave your hair lifeless and dry. If you do not use your hair dryer the right way, it can also cause damage to your hair.
Friction due to sleeping on cotton pillow case
Stress
Excessive washing with harsh alcohols and soaps or using wrong shampoos
Trim your hair: Hair tends to be most damaged toward the tips. A healthy trim may be the direction to go to help your damaged hair look their best
Protein shampoo: Use a gentle protein based shampoo and a natural protein conditioner after hair trimming
Air dry your hair and don’t use irons on it. Let the damaged hair dry naturally. If you really need to blow dry your hair, keep it on the lowest heat setting.
